What it is
A specialist consultation brings together the child’s history, development, examination and existing reports. The aim is to understand the concern, decide whether investigations are appropriate and agree clear next steps with the family.
Why it may be requested
- A first seizure or repeated unusual episodes
- Developmental delay or loss of previously acquired skills
- Headache, abnormal movement, weakness, altered tone or balance concerns
- A complex neurological, neurogenetic or neuroinflammatory condition
What to expect
The doctor will ask about pregnancy and birth history, milestones, medicines, family history, school and therapy observations, then examine the child in an age-appropriate way. A diagnosis is not always possible at the first visit.
Approximate duration
Consultation length varies with clinical complexity. Reception will confirm the booked time.
How to prepare
Bring the referral letter, medication list, previous reports, actual MRI/CT images where available, EEG results, school or therapy reports and safe phone videos of concerning episodes.
Sedation considerations
Sedation is not normally part of a consultation. If a later investigation may require sedation, the reason, benefits, risks and hospital instructions are discussed separately.
Results and reports
The family receives an explanation of the working assessment and next steps. Reports for referring clinicians are communicated through the practice’s secure clinical process.
