What it is
Nerve conduction studies use brief electrical pulses at the skin to measure nerve responses. Electromyography (EMG), when needed, uses a very fine sterile needle electrode in selected muscles to record muscle activity. The tests answer different questions and may be performed together.
Why it may be requested
- Unexplained weakness, fatigue or motor delay
- Possible nerve, muscle or neuromuscular-junction disorder
- Numbness, altered reflexes or muscle wasting
- Monitoring a known neuromuscular condition when clinically indicated
What to expect
Sticky recording electrodes are placed on the skin. Nerve stimulation feels like quick taps or brief shocks and can be uncomfortable. Needle EMG may cause a short sharp feeling and temporary muscle soreness; only the muscles needed for the clinical question are tested.
Approximate duration
Many studies take approximately 30-90 minutes, depending on the child, the question and how many nerves or muscles must be assessed.
How to prepare
Keep skin clean and free of lotion or oil. Wear loose, warm clothing and bring a medication list. Tell the team in advance about bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medicine, implanted devices, severe needle anxiety or infection near a test site.
Sedation considerations
These tests are usually performed awake because cooperation and voluntary muscle activation may be needed. Sedation is not routine and must be discussed before the appointment if there are exceptional concerns.
Results and reports
The findings are interpreted with the examination and other tests. A report is sent through the agreed clinical pathway; results are not normally finalised by the technologist in the room.
