What it is
Evoked potentials measure the brain’s electrical response to a controlled stimulus. Visual tests may use a checkerboard screen or flashes. Auditory tests use clicks or tones through earphones. Scalp electrodes record responses; they do not deliver electricity to the brain.
Why it may be requested
- Questions about visual or auditory pathways
- Possible injury or inflammation affecting sensory pathways
- Neurological assessment where a child cannot describe sensory change reliably
- Follow-up of selected neurogenetic or neuroinflammatory conditions
What to expect
Electrodes are attached to the scalp. The child watches a screen or receives sounds through earphones while remaining as still and relaxed as possible. More than one run may be recorded to check consistency.
Approximate duration
Allow roughly 30-90 minutes depending on the study, preparation and cooperation. The practice will confirm the booked time.
How to prepare
Bring glasses or hearing devices normally used, unless told otherwise. Hair should be clean and free of oils or styling products. Let the practice know about significant vision or hearing impairment before the test.
Sedation considerations
Sedation is not routinely used. Some recordings can be performed during natural sleep. Any special plan must be agreed before the appointment.
Results and reports
A clinician reviews waveform timing and quality in clinical context. Results are communicated to the referring clinician through the practice’s secure process.
