Developmental and neurodevelopmental assessment

Neurological assessment of delay, regression, autism-associated concerns, learning differences, behaviour and coordination.

What it is

This assessment considers how a child learns, communicates, moves, plays and manages everyday tasks, together with neurological symptoms and the child’s health history.

Why it may be requested

  • Milestones are later than expected
  • A child loses skills they previously had
  • Developmental or behavioural concerns occur with seizures, unusual movements or weakness
  • School or therapy teams have raised neurological concerns

What to expect

The visit may include observation, a neurological examination, growth review and discussion of school and therapy information. Further hearing, vision, genetic, imaging or laboratory assessment is recommended only when clinically appropriate.

Approximate duration

These appointments may need more time than a focused follow-up. Reception will confirm the booked time.

How to prepare

Bring the Road to Health booklet, school reports, therapy assessments, hearing or vision results, previous genetic or imaging reports and a list of specific family concerns.

Sedation considerations

No sedation is used for the consultation. If imaging is later recommended, the imaging team will assess whether the child can remain still or needs a separate sedation plan.

Results and reports

The outcome may be a working formulation and staged plan rather than one immediate label. Recommendations can include targeted tests, therapy coordination and follow-up.
