Preparing for NCS and EMG

Help the child know what the nerve and muscle tests may feel like.

01

Skin

Keep the skin clean and free of lotion or oil on the day.

02

Clothing

Wear loose clothing that allows access to the arms and legs and helps the child stay warm.

03

Tell the team

Mention bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medicines, implanted devices, infection near a test site or severe needle anxiety.

04

Explain honestly

Nerve stimulation feels like quick taps or brief shocks. If needle EMG is needed, a very fine needle may cause a short sharp feeling.

05

Afterwards

Temporary tenderness or a small bruise can occur at a needle site. Follow any child-specific advice from the team.
