Plain-language overview
A seizure can be frightening for families, and not every unusual episode is epilepsy. A paediatric neurologist reviews the story carefully, considers videos or witness descriptions, and advises on further tests or treatment planning where appropriate.
This page cannot determine the cause of a symptom or whether a child needs urgent care. A clinical assessment is individual.
When families may seek assessment
- Episodes of staring, collapse, jerking, confusion or unresponsiveness
- Events during sleep or after fever
- Repeated events or changes in alertness after an episode
- Questions about seizure medication, safety or follow-up
Assessment may include
Detailed event history and review of safely recorded videos
Neurological examination and medication review
EEG coordination or interpretation if applicable
Discussion of further investigations when clinically indicated
Preparing for the consultation
Bring previous reports, current medication details, school or therapy feedback and safely recorded videos of events if available. Never delay emergency care to record a video.
