Plain-language overview
Learning and attention difficulties may need child-neurology input when they occur alongside developmental delay, regression, seizures, unusual movements or other neurological symptoms. Assessment considers the child’s development, medical history, school experience and existing reports.
This page cannot determine the cause of a symptom or whether a child needs urgent care. A clinical assessment is individual.
When families may seek assessment
- Learning difficulties together with neurological symptoms
- Attention or behaviour changes after seizures, illness or injury
- Developmental concerns affecting progress at school
- School or therapy reports recommending neurological assessment
Assessment may include
Developmental, medical and school history
Review of school, psychology and therapy reports
Neurological examination where appropriate
Coordination with the child’s existing support team
Preparing for the consultation
Bring previous reports, current medication details, school or therapy feedback and safely recorded videos of events if available. Never delay emergency care to record a video.
